Kernel Mode Setting
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Kernel Modesetting allows the kernel to switch between high- and low- resolution graphics without reinitialising the graphics card/driver. It is especially useful for setting up Framebuffer.
Currently, the Intel GMA, nouveau and radeon drivers support KMS. You should read the linked articles to see how to enable KMS with each of them.
Note that KMS is a new feature - you should check your driver documentation to check for requirements or other minimum versions.
